Pacifiers & Bottles

Since about 4 weeks I started offering a pacifier. Bought a few different kinds and there was only one he would take without gagging. Probably my least favorite in appearance though because I don't like how you can see inside his mouth. haha It's really hit or miss with him. I don't offer it probably enough to make a big difference because I go back and forth. I want him to take it to maybe avoid the thumb sucking, but I don't want to get up in the middle of the night several times putting it back it. But I still give it to him sometimes during the day. Mostly if we are out and about and he is crying and I can't do anything about it. (check out line at the grocery store!)
Here is the gum drop pacifier...

Last Saturday Nathan gave Weston his first bottle. It went ok for a first time. Had some resistance and cried, but got the hang of it quick and drank about two ounces from Nathan. Since then he has gotten one two other times. Right now, we have Nathan giving him one bottle every two days to try and keep it fresh. I was nervous how he would nurse after the first bottle, but he latched on as if nothing every happened! These are special nursing bottles that are supposed to simulate nursing and takes a long time. Well I think I might try some regular bottles because it takes twice the time to get these two ounces out as nurses and I think he gives up from being satisfied and tired of trying instead of being full because he will nurse right after. Unlike some mothers I've talked to, I guess my milk just comes out super fast! If he unlatches after the let down, it's spraying him all in the face! haha So it isn't as if he has to suck hard and it doesn't take more than 10 minutes to nurse. Maybe a bottle that lets it come out easier will help him. But right now I'm just thankful he is taking to them! Maybe in about a month I can go out on a date with my husband! :)

  1. I'm glad he's doing good with the bottle! It's been so crazy around here, that I haven't offered Rachel a bottle yet. We tried one pacifier and she was just angry about it. :) So now I think I'm just nervous that I've waited too late.

  2. Is that a breastflow bottle? We tried those and I just couldn't get them to work. I wanted them to work...haha..my kids just preferred a faster flow then that(don't blame them as I was a water hose like you are saying about yourself!). :) We found a lot of success with the original Playtex nursers and the Tommy Tippee Bottles..

  3. Lucy loves her GumDrop pacifiers! I've offered her some other types and she doesn't like any of them except for those. You're right -- it's weird to see inside their mouth! Also, it's hard to find a paci holder since the little paci holder hole is so small. But she loves them and I read that many breastfeeding babies prefer them which is why I bought them in the first place.

We've tried almost every kind of bottle with Lucy and she ended up liking just the plain old nipples that you can get from the hospital or whatever. Which is nice because they sent us home with about a million of them when she was in the ICU the first time. :)

  4. That's the exact pacifier that Kylie liked above all others! There must be something special about them. I'm glad he's doing well with the bottles! For a couple of months, Kylie had to drink out of a really, really slow nipple because the faster ones were causing her to spit up (and the doctor thought she had acid reflux). Just another reason why breastfeeding is better than bottles, haha.

  5. I got so mad at that Breastflow bottle that I was about ready to throw it away! We had to use the Dr Brown's bottles for Chase because he had tummy problems so we just got new nipples to use them for Bella. All has been fine with those. Hope your date is soon!
