Confession: I know it sounds silly and probably a little rediculous, but potty training is one of my least favorite parts of parenting so far.
I dreaded it with Addison and put off longer than she probably needed. When we did it, it was pretty easy and she got at least the #1 part down basically on day one. The other took a little time because she was scared.
Partly it's the grossesness of #2 accidents that bother me but hopefully that will go better this time. Mostly, it's the conveince of it. There I said it. I know it's lazy, but it's true. It's always being prepared for accidents and packing extra clothes. It's having a cart full of groceries and having to RUN to the bathroom the moment a toddler needs to go because they don't know how to hold it once they feel the urge! It's all the yucky public bathrooms you have to visit because of tiny bladders that can't wait until you're home OR because they're excited and want to visit EVERY new bathroom they can. haha It's traveling in the car and having to stop a lot more. ETC...
For a little while now I put off potty training Weston. For at least the last 6 weeks, he has woken up every morning with a dry diaper. (Keep in mind he still nurses before bed and around 5am and goes back to sleep.) He holds it for a long time during the day as well. Then he has had the cast so it it was too hard to pull his pants down. We are weaning him off the cast now so I decided it was time.
We started yesterday. I'm really an all or nothing type person sometimes. In potty training, that's kind of how I feel. I will use pull ups for napping for a little while and at night time for longer. (Mostly because I do not want to change sheets in the middle of the night!) When he is awake, he will be in real big boy underwear. I don't like pullups because it feels like a diaper. I want him to FEEL the accident. I don't do little potties because I don't want to clean them about each time and since you can't take them with you, they have to learn how to use a big potty in public.
So far, it's been good. He had one half accident in his underwear during the day. He came to me saying, "Look! See!" and grabbing himself. I put him on the potty and he finished and then we talked about it. I was proud that he has least seemed to stop himself when he felt wet. I told him he made the dinosaurs sad (ones on his underwear) when he got them wet. He cried and cried! I was surprised he took it so hard. haha We talked about how everyone makes mistakes and he just had to try again because he was learning and that he can pick out new underwear. He stayed dry the rest of the day. Then in the 30 minutes Nathan was in charge while I took a shower last night, he pooped in his underwear. He did go right to Nathan and tell him what he did.
So far today he is staying dry. I don't set timers. I just take him once every hour and try and get him to drink water in between. With Addison I just basically had her in underwear, had towels on the couches, and she had to stay off the carpet. It went so well that this time I've feeling a lot more brave. He is fully dressed with socks and shoes, no towels, and they are playing in Addison's room. haha Might even leave the house later. Brave!
PS. Most of the time I think all girl clothes and accessories are a lot cuter...but a tiny boy booty in little briefs is so stiking cute!!
I agree about pull-ups and little potties! We do pull-ups during nap time and night time only, too (just until I get into a groove with 2 kids, then I plan to wean her off those!). And little potties totally gross me out. We do have a little potty seat that fits onto the toilet to make the hole in the toilet smaller so she doesn't fall in but she uses the potty without it just fine, too. I'm so glad Weston is potty training easily! That gives me hope for the future haha. Oh but now I remember there is another blog after this about him potty training so hopefully it's a good report too!
